Figment Concert Poster Contest

December 9th, 2009

If you’re like me you had and still have a few concert posters on a wall somewhere in your house.  Okay, so maybe they’re not hanging on your bedroom wall anymore,  more likely they’ve been banished to the basement, but regardless they’re there.  Sure you could replace them with a landscape, a nondescript print or god forbid some lame Thomas Kincaid painting of a cottage on a cold winter’s day, but damn it you won’t!  To hell with the naysayers!  They’re art, and better yet they’re art that not only effects you visually but aurally as well.  They’re concert posters and when you look at them you’re at that concert.

On Figment we’ve had a lot of bands go on tour and that’s great, but what some of the tours are missing is a defining image that really captures that tour.  In short, they need a good concert poster.   With that in mind, we thought it was high time we created a Figment Concert Poster Contest.  That’s right, we’re looking for you to create an original poster for one of your Figment bands.

What’s even more exciting though, is that we’ve enlisted concert poster designer Lonny Unitus to be the ultimate judge.  For those of you who aren’t familiar with Lon, he’s been involved in poster design since 1997 when he began creating hand-drawn xeroxed posters for local bands in the college town of Fargo, ND.  In 2001, he began screen printing posters with the help of his friend Justin Seng and has designed posters ever since for bands as diverse as Apples in Stereo, AC Newman, The Melvins, Guttermouth, Riverboat Gamblers, French Kicks, The Walkmen and Mastodon among others.   You can check out some of his posters on  A talented designer, Lon has also created merchandise for some of the biggest bands in the business including Kiss, Ozzy Osbourne, Slipknot, Lynyrd Skynyrd and Rob Zombie.  A resident of Minneapolis, he’s a member of the Minneapolis Cartoonist Conspiracy and  has twice participated in the annual boxed set of mini-comics “Lutefisk Sushi” as well as published an anthology comic, “Unhinged”, featuring artists from all over the United States.  Needless to say, we’re thrilled to have Lon on-board as a judge.  He’ll pick the winner of the contest and 2 runners up.

So what does the lucky winner get?  Well, that’s the REALLY exciting part.  The winner will receive a screen printed concert poster for their tour designed and printed by Lon himself, and 2,000 pieces of lucre.  The runners up will receive a Figment t-shirt and 1,000 and 500 pieces of lucre respectively.

So how do you enter?  Well, I’m glad you asked – here’s the basic rules:

1. You must be a registered Figment user to participate.  If you don’t currently have a Figment account please click here to create one.  This contest is open to Figment users worldwide.

2.  Create a fake tour/music festival on Figment using the “create a band” link on your dashboard and post an original concert poster image for that tour/festival.  (Note:  when you create the tour page you can either select the musical genre that best fits the bands on the bill or use the Music Festival genre available in the list.)  You may also create or enter a poster for an existing tour or music festival that you have previously created on Figment.  To be considered the poster must be original (not a copied image from a real band’s concert poster) and be based on a fake band that you have created on Figment. You can include other players bands as well, but make sure you have their permission before adding their name to your poster.  Once you have created a tour page with the poster you want to submit as an entry, please post your user name and the tour’s name as a comment to this post so everyone can check it out.  If you don’t post your name and the tour’s name as a comment to this post your entry won’t be considered.

3. Users may enter as many tours/festival posters as they would like.

4.  Any artwork used in the creation of your concert poster should either be original or at least one at which you have the permission of the copyright owner to use.  You may NOT simply copy the artwork from an existing poster and add your own text.  Inspired by is one thing, but ripped off is another.  Any poster designs that are judged as being a copy of an existing work will be disqualified.  We will also disqualify any poster that is offensive in nature – sexist, racist or hate-based.

4.  The contest will run from Wednesday, December 9th until Friday, January 29, 2010.  All submissions must be posted by no later than 11:59 pm ET on Friday, January 29, 2010.

5.  By no later than, Wednesday, February 3, 2010 the Figment editorial staff will select the Top 10 poster designs and submit them to Lonny Unitus.  Lonny will then pick the Top 3 (a winner and two runners up) and they’ll be announced on this blog on Friday, February 5, 2010.

We’re really excited about this contest and we hope you will be too.  If you have any questions please don’t hesitate to contact us at customerservice at or leave your question as a comment on this post.

Now get out on the road!!!
