Tenth ExodusDate Released: 3/20/2009 Tracks: 7 Sales: 18 Listens: 24 Thunderous riffs. Bludgeoning percussion. Complete sonic annihilation. Doom metallers Crimson Eye unleash their debut effort 'Tenth Exodus' on an unsuspecting world. Notice has been served, a new power has arisen... |
WarmongerDate Released: 3/21/2009 Tracks: 4 Sales: 13 Listens: 18 Crimson Eye are back with a new EP, 'Warmonger' [Long Bong Records], pushing the bounds of sonic mayhem beyond those set by their debut, 'Tenth Exodus'. While 'Warmonger' builds upon Crimson Eye's strengths, case in point the steamroller-being-molested-by-jackhammer grind of the mysterious instrumental "UNTS", it also broadens their range. The thrash metal attack of the blistering "Panzerfaust" and the complex structures of the epic 18-minute "Dread Legion" suite offering ample evidence. |
fibonacci epochDate Released: 3/23/2009 Tracks: 9 Sales: 20 Listens: 29 Pronouncing the band's name [it's zir-auth], is likely the least complex aspect of their Long Bong Records debut, fibonacci epoch [sic]. These guys take a cerebral approach to their metal, with complex time signatures [7/4, 9/8, 13/4 and more] and liberal use of polyrhythms. This is thinking-man's music for sure. Highlights include "Hydroclysm", "Devious Emotion", and an inspired reworking of Tool's Fibonacci-influenced "Lateralus" which closes the album. |
NoospheromonesDate Released: 3/25/2009 Tracks: 5 Sales: 13 Listens: 13 Math-metal upstarts Zeroth are at it again.... Their latest Long Bong Records EP, 'Noonspheromones', tackles the primacy of sexuality in the human mentality. One has to wonder, Where do they come up with this stuff? But, when it sounds this good, it's best to just lay back and enjoy the ride - in 64/17th time. |
Ganja ScarabDate Released: 3/29/2009 Tracks: 10 Sales: 10 Listens: 32 Five thousand years in the making, Long Bong Records' latest discovery, The Rastapharaohs release their debut 'Ganja Scarab' and turn the world on to their Egyptian-infused reggae. As the "Pharaohs" like to remind us, you can't spell rasta without 'Ra'. |
Barn Raising From HellDate Released: 4/2/2009 Tracks: 8 Sales: 26 Listens: 35 Well, you've got to hand it to them, Long Bong Records certainly went out on a limb with their latest find; Amish metallers, Amish Militia. Their debut disc, 'Barn Raising From Hell', will likely find an audience among disaffected Amish youth, but the question is, will any of them be able to buy the album, let alone, get a ride to a record store....? Regardless, you need to pick up this album and witness [oh yeah, we went there...] their surprising prowess for yourself. |
SupercrusherDate Released: 4/9/2009 Tracks: 9 Sales: 10 Listens: 15 Crimson Eye guitarists Adam Young and Jimmy Gibbons unleash some of the heaviest riffs ever put to record in their side project Supercrusher. Their self-titled debut serves up 9 ground-shaking tracks, featuring the standout opener "Supercrusher", the atmospheric "Coma Engine", and the Tolkein-inspired "Gargoyle". |
KaliclysmDate Released: 4/10/2009 Tracks: 1 Sales: 5 Listens: 6 Drummer from prog-metal titans Zeroth, known only as "K" releases a side project that will go down as either a stroke of genius, or an example of rock star excess. The self-titled EP, "Kaliclysm", is a single 27-minute instrumental track ["Kali Is My Bitch"]; basically an extended drum solo, with washes of instrumentation (guest performances from other Zeroth members). K deftly shifts between time signatures, and there are moments where you'd swear he must have grown extra limbs. |
Beezelbub's BuggyDate Released: 4/16/2009 Tracks: 5 Sales: 16 Listens: 15 Those wild-eyed Amish boys are back.... Long Bong Records' Amish Militia serve up another helping of Mennonite metal, with their new EP; 'Beezelbub's Buggy', and once again show that there's more to Lancaster County than buggies, barns and bonnets [booyah!]. The disc opens with the driving, "Lights Out In Lancaster", followed by the soon-to-be-stripper-fave "Plowin' The Back 40", finally climaxing with Beezelbub's Buggy" and a revisitation of "Hot Bonnet Babes" from their debut. |
ImperiumDate Released: 4/19/2009 Tracks: 16 Sales: 9 Listens: 10 "Cast Iron" is not just the first track on Crimson Eye's second full-length release, 'Imperium' [Long Bong Records], it's also the consistency of their balls. Daring to release a metal concept double-album certainly took a huge pair, but their risk was well-calculated. With powerful subject matter [totalitarianism], and their signature devastating sonic assault, Crimson Eye take insipiration from Metallica's 'Master of Puppets' and '...And Justice For All' and arguably do them one better. |
Untitled ["Death's Head EP"]Date Released: 4/21/2009 Tracks: 6 Sales: 8 Listens: 8 Crimson Eye's original theme for what became 'Imperium' was the clash of Nazi Germany and the USSR in WWII. A number of tracks were developed that were ultimately discarded, given the more general totalitarian theme of the completed 'Imperium' [though "Death's Head" was reworked into "Praetorian Elite"]. Their newly released EP [untitled, known as the "Death's Head EP" based on the cover art] reveals some of the heaviest tracks, both thematically and musically, that Crimson Eye have released. |
per-'ke-shenDate Released: 4/22/2009 Tracks: 8 Sales: 7 Listens: 7 Zeroth's drummer "K" has put together another album under his side project 'Kaliclysm'. 'per-'ke-shen' [phonetic spelling of "percussion"] is a collection of instrumental covers of some of the most demanding rock, metal and jazz drum-oriented tunes ever recorded. Once again, K enlists some of his Zeroth bandmates for support. The clear standout is the interpretation of Buddy Rich's "Channel One Suite", equally for the interpretation of the horn parts on guitar as well as K's inspired playing. |
ObeliskDate Released: 4/23/2009 Tracks: 11 Sales: 14 Listens: 14 Long Bong Records' math-metal stars Zeroth release their second full-length disc 'Obelisk'. It might have been better-named 'Monolith', given the singularly massive slabs of prog-metal they construct. As with most music in this genre, it's a complicated listen and not for the faint of heart. Once again, Zeroth give a nod to their influences with an inspired cover of Meshuggah's 'Perpetual Black Second'. 'Transoptical', 'Insensate', and the moody closer, 'Entropy' are other standout tracks. |
Catatonic BabylonDate Released: 4/26/2009 Tracks: 5 Sales: 13 Listens: 13 We've come to expect the unexpected from Zeroth, but nothing could have prepared us for what was on their latest Long Bong Records release, 'Catatonic Babylon' [EP]: a Grateful Dead cover. Covers are not new for Zeroth - they have previously covered songs from Tool and Meshuggah, but those were clear math-metal influences. The inclusion of 'Cryptical Envelopment' on this disc was nothing short of genius. Jerry Berry would likely barely recognize his tune, but Zeroth make it work, big time. |
Insane O'ClockDate Released: 4/28/2009 Tracks: 10 Sales: 8 Listens: 11 Madness. Mayhem. Meds... That sums up the approach and the message of Frantic Decadence on their Long Bong Records debut 'Insane O'Clock'. Don't look here for meaningful commentary, there is none. Just a rockin' good time.... Highlights include the ode to muscle cars "Primer Black", ode to the fairer sex "Nympho Hunter" and of course, a cover of Queens of the Stone Age's ode to excess "Feel Good Hit Of The Summer". As FD says, Live Fast, Die Happy! |
Maximum PsiDate Released: 5/5/2009 Tracks: 6 Sales: 7 Listens: 9 Not merely content to lay waste to their surroundings as part of Crimson Eye, Adam Young and Jimmy Gibbons continue their quest for sonic mayhem with their side project Supercrusher. Their latest Long Bong Records release 'Maximum Psi' plumbs the depths of bowel-shaking metal, with one heavy grinding riff after another. The opener "Tectonic Upheaval" sounds just like that: huge land masses grinding against each other. "Tremorizer" and "Seismic Anomaly" are the other lowlights. |
Obsidian ParadoxDate Released: 5/7/2009 Tracks: 9 Sales: 10 Listens: 9 Long Bong Records is clearly hoping lighting will strike twice with their latest math-metal discovery, Obsidian Paradox. Hot on the heels of the success of Zeroth, Obsidian Paradox's self-titled debut ups the ante for complex, left-brain metal music. Whereas Zeroth focuses on pseudo-scientific/-mathematical concepts for their subject matter, OP delves deeper in the psyche and establish a dark Zen feel. "Apocalypse Serpentine" and "Black Crescent" are the clear highlights of this fine debut. |
Rome-Berlin 5.15&16.09 [Live]Date Released: 5/19/2009 Tracks: 20 Sales: 10 Listens: 11 What better way to capture the live performance of their 'Imperium' album in its' entirety, than to record Crimson Eye shows in the two cities that loomed large over the album itself: Rome and Berlin. Crimson Eye deliver the goods in two inspired shows, tearing through the full 'Imperium' plus other prime cuts from their 'Tenth Exodus' and 'Warmonger' discs. Packed with tour art and other goodies, this live double CD set is a must-own for the many fans of the band. |
LiveDate Released: 5/23/2009 Tracks: 18 Sales: 10 Listens: 10 Welcome to the controlled madness that is Zeroth in concert. Recorded during their Infinite Spiral Tour, their double-CD 'Live' showcases Zeroth at their mind-boggling best. They alternately deliver precise renditions of their studio tracks, and then morph songs into the metal equivalent of extended jam band explorations. A must-buy for the fans of the math-metal titans, and a preview of what's in-store when Zeroth headline the Merchants of Metal Festival. |
UncoveredDate Released: 5/26/2009 Tracks: 6 Sales: 9 Listens: 9 Math-metal stars Zeroth have repeatedly paid homage to their predecessors by covering songs influential to their sound. They have taken this one step further on their latest release 'Uncovered' [Long Bong Records], by releasing an album comprised entirely of covers recorded live on their Infinite Spiral Tour. As one would expect from left-brainers like Zeroth, the selections run strongly to prog-rock/-metal choices. All the performances are strong, but standouts are the Rush and Tool medleys. |
III A.M.Date Released: 5/28/2009 Tracks: 8 Sales: 13 Listens: 18 You knew it would come to this: on their debut disc, Amish Militia raise a metallic barn, and on their third effort ['III A.M.', Long Bong Records], they burn it right down. Starting off slow, with the atmospheric "3 A.M. [Candle's Burning Low]", they quickly get into rampaging form on "Buggy Burnouts" and there's no looking back. Standout tracks include the blistering "Burnin' Down The Barn", an excellent cover of Monster Magnet's "Crop Circle", and the devastating closer "Amigeddon". |
The Saga Of Carus: I. Journey To Roh'OrnDate Released: 6/2/2009 Tracks: 8 Sales: 8 Listens: 9 Lords Of Winter release 'Journey To Roh'Orn', the first of a projected trilogy of albums documenting the saga of the hero Carus. Carus is a humble man, a reluctant hero charged with solving an ancient riddle. As he starts out on a path through the frozen wastes, challenges are met and his life hangs in the balance. Finally, he arrives at the throne of the Winter King of Roh'Orn, where he learns much and realizes his journey is only beginning.... |
Neurotic ReflexDate Released: 6/15/2009 Tracks: 8 Sales: 7 Listens: 5 Hot on the heels of their outstanding performance at the Merchants Of Metal Festival, Obsidian Paradox are back with their second full-length 'Neurotic Reflex'. Once again, showing that Zeroth are not alone in delivering top-notch math-metal, OP unleash eight complex and commanding tracks. Highlights include the explosive opener "Neurotic Reflex", the fast-changing "Perpetual Prodigal", and the two mood pieces; "Fragile Killer" and "Tribulation". |
EclipseDate Released: 6/23/2009 Tracks: 11 Sales: 13 Listens: 14 Zeroth are back, unleashing a torrent of mind-blowing math metal on 'Eclipse'. The aptly-named opener "Vortex" is a twisting labyrinth of shifting tempos and swirling guitars. "Supernova Canticle" has to be one of the most outrageously complex pieces of music ever recorded. Then there's the crowning glory: the epic 18-minute "Eclipse" suite will surely go down as a career-defining performance for Zeroth. What would a Zeroth album be without a cover: Rush is given the nod with "Cygnus X-1". |
Noospheromones - ReloadedDate Released: 7/23/2009 Tracks: 17 Sales: 11 Listens: 10 Given the precision with which Long Bong Records stars Zeroth execute their brand of math-metal, it was startling when their EP "Noospheromones" went out with a major typo on the cover. Consider this their apology to their fans. For the price of a single disc, Zeroth deliver a double-length reworking of the 'Noospheromones' disc, including the original 5 cuts, 6 remixed tracks, 4 live tracks, a new Tool cover ["Third Eye"] and a totally new composition, "Copious Ecstasy". Apology accepted.... |
The Saga Of Carus: II. Lost Legion Of The TundraDate Released: 7/23/2009 Tracks: 9 Sales: 10 Listens: 10 Lords Of Winter pick up the tale of Carus with their latest release "The Saga Of Carus: II. Lost Legion Of The Tundra". Pressing on from the hall of the Winter King, Carus makes his way to the Valley of the Ice Demons ["Iche'Dvon"] aka "The Grey Ones", undergoes a harrowing experience ["Frozen Tears And Hardened Hearts"], and finally meets up with the Lost Legion Of The Tundra. Following a raucous feast, he learns of the ancient tomb under Mt. Cor'Deh'Nan, where his destiny ultimately awaits. |
Karma BulletDate Released: 7/28/2009 Tracks: 9 Sales: 6 Listens: 6 Crimson Eye are back with their latest effort, 'Karma Bullet'. Once again straining their classification as "doom metal", Crimson Eye turn in a tight set of 9 tracks that range from full-on thrash ["Assault Regulator"], to doom sludge ["The Third Follower"], to the a capella closer - in latin of all things - "Epitaph". Crimson Eye once again provide their many fans a feast for the ears, and reinforce their position among the top bands in the Long Bong Records stable. |
Underground Nuclear Test SiteDate Released: 7/29/2009 Tracks: 3 Sales: 6 Listens: 9 The mystery behind Crimson Eye's instrumental "UNTS" has finally been revealed. 'Underground Nuclear Test Site' is the latest EP from Crimson Eye, featuring Zandergriff Miggs, of Parliament Of Owls fame, on his beloved Hammond organ. The EP contains only three tracks, but they are superlative: a re-mix of the original "UNTS"; an extended 28-minute jam session, in which "UNTS" morphs from grinding doom to full-on funk and back again; and a blistering cover of Deep Purple's "Space Truckin'". |
PortalsDate Released: 7/29/2009 Tracks: 6 Sales: 13 Listens: 13 Six tracks. Fifty-seven minutes. A dizzying array of riffs and polyrhythms. Zeroth. LBR's math metal titans are back at it on their latest release 'Portals', once more pushing the boundaries of mind-bending metal to the extreme. Perhaps most striking is their blending of traditional Indian Rajasthan styles with left-brain metal on the epic 13-minute "Gyananakashu" [Indian for "the eye of knowledge"]. That experience alone makes 'Portals' worth the price of admission. |
PyramidionDate Released: 8/2/2009 Tracks: 8 Sales: 6 Listens: 12 Rastapharaohs have finally emerged from a cloud of ganja smoke with a follow-up to their 'Ganja Scarab' debut. 'Pyramidion' continues their unique melding of Egyptian themes and influences with reggae beats, all done with tongue firmly in-cheek, and once again provides a compelling listen. Highlights [pun intended] include the opener "Pyramidion, Mon!", the extra phunky "Ankh Funk #10", the trippy "High(roglyph)", and the eerie chanted closer, "Grounation: Niyabinghi Osiris". |
War CrestDate Released: 8/10/2009 Tracks: 9 Sales: 9 Listens: 9 Long Bong Records' latest metal discovery Blackened Skull Ensemble turn in a strong debut with their 'War Crest' album. Featuring breakneck thrash tempos and military-themed imagery, BSE hark back to the late '80s heyday of the Big Four. Highlights include the galloping opener/title track "War Crest", the punishing "Vernichtungskrieg", and the homage to Metallica's "One", "Angels Of Valhalla". An auspicious debut. |
WeedspringaDate Released: 8/11/2009 Tracks: 9 Sales: 12 Listens: 12 As Amish Militia declare on 'Weedspringa'; Amish is the New Black. Those bad-ass buggy boys from Lancaster, PA are back with another pummeling exercise in doom metal. Opening with a droning monotone chant extolling the virtues of the cannabis leaf on "Hymn: Cannabaceae", AM quickly get down to business on the rampaging "Cast Out". The masterpiece of the album is the epic 12-minute instrumental, "A Crack In The Martyr's Mirror", which will surely go down as a milestone of the metal genre. |
Genocide BabylonDate Released: 8/25/2009 Tracks: 9 Sales: 11 Listens: 11 Taking extreme music to new realms, Jesus Wrench [featuring Stephen Smythe and Trey Drake of Kings Of Hades] release their debut, 'Genocide Babylon'. As one would expect from the title, the album is brutal, unrelenting and bleak. Smythe sheds any pretense at singing found with KoH and goes straight for death-robot growls, grunts and screams. Likewise, the dual guitar assault of Smythe and Tom Holz is precise and abrasive, with Drake and Drew Grey providing a punishing rhythmic foundation. |
The Saga Of Carus: III. Heart Of The MountainDate Released: 9/10/2009 Tracks: 9 Sales: 7 Listens: 7 Lords Of Winter deliver the third and final installment of the epic story of Carus with 'The Saga Of Carus; III. Heart Of The Mountain. Leaving the Lost Legion Of The Tundra behind, Carus journeys to the towering Mt. Cor'Deh'Nan, and into the very heart of the mountain itself. Challenges and puzzles abound, but he arrives at the fabled tomb of the ancient king Ulf Ragnarok. There he uncovers untold secrets of the origins of the world and his people. A fitting climax to this powerful saga. |
Singularity [Single]Date Released: 9/15/2009 Tracks: 2 Sales: 9 Listens: 10 Recorded on a day off during Crimson Eye's 2009 'Shot Of Karma' North American Tour, Supercrusher's latest offering "Singularity" is an impossibly heavy doom masterpiece clocking-in at just under nine minutes. As on previous Supercrusher albums, all duties handled by Young and Gibbons. For the "B-side", Supercrusher acknowledge a thematic and equally crushing riff-laden inspiration with a stellar cover of Sabbath's classic "Into The Void". |
Static PsychosisDate Released: 9/18/2009 Tracks: 9 Sales: 6 Listens: 5 Obsidian Paradox are back with their latest release 'Static Psychosis', once again probing into the dark corners of the human condition. Pairing weighty subject matter with complex math-metal, OP turn in another powerful effort. From the dissonant noise of the opener/title track, to the eerie feedback manipulation that ends the closer "Beyond Delirium", OP display masterful chops as they take the listener on a rollercoaster ride of rapid tempo changes and emotion. |
Tapac YuanDate Released: 9/24/2009 Tracks: 8 Sales: 6 Listens: 6 Zeroth's 2009 swing through South America clearly made a major impact on drummer K, as the latest effort from his side project Kaliclysm 'Tapac Yuan' [Golden Staff] is entirely built around regional/tribal music and themes. Recorded in local studios and employing local musicians to complement his apparently limitless percussive skills, K turns in an impressive set of performances, ranging from percussive drones to avante garde jazz to modern rock, all capturing the flavors of the region. |
Old No. 666Date Released: 10/5/2009 Tracks: 9 Sales: 11 Listens: 17 LBR's resident party animals Frantic Decadence are back with a vengeance on 'Old No. 666'. From the opening blast of FM radio static on "Doctor Zero" to the final echoing chorus of "The Last Time [Until The Next Time]", 'Old No. 666' unfolds liks a cautionary tale of rock star excess gone bad [or good, depending on your perspective]. Fast cars, faster women and plentiful booze are the perks, and Frantic Decadence take it to the limit yet again. |
Predatory UrgeDate Released: 10/6/2009 Tracks: 10 Sales: 8 Listens: 7 Incredibly heavy and unrelenting, Supercrusher [with K of Zeroth on drums] unleash another assault on the listening public with their latest release 'Predatory Urge'. Supercrusher deliver crushing riff after crushing riff, paired with strong lyrical imagery evoking the struggle for survival. The previously-released "Singularity", the raw "Primordial", and the sinister "The True Breed" are standout tracks. Includes a bonus track, a live recording of "Singularity" performed by Crimson Eye. |
Harvest Of The BraveDate Released: 10/22/2009 Tracks: 9 Sales: 10 Listens: 10 Jesus Wrench's latest 'Harvest Of The Brave' opens ominously, with the instrumental "Forwards!" slowly building until it explodes into intense riffery. From that point on, there is no looking back. Jesus Wrench unload punishing riff after punishing riff, overlaid with Stephen Smythe's evocative lyrics. The title track is the literal and figurative centerpiece of the album, with its' savage imagery of struggle and death, and will surely become a benchmark for death metal bands going forward. |

Amish Paradise [Single; Weird Al Yankovic Cover]Date Released: 10/26/2009 Tracks: 1 Sales: 9 Listens: 9 If there was ever any doubt idle hands are the devil's playground, Amish Militia's cover of Weird Al Yankovic's "Amish Paradise" [parody of rapper Coolio's "Gangsters' Paradise"] proves it for sure. With a week or two to kill before Merchants Of Metal II, Amish Militia hit the studio and turn out a death metal version of a rap song parody that easily surpasses Coolio's original in terms of sinister intent, fueled by Jan Lapp's growled vocals. |
ExodusDate Released: 11/5/2009 Tracks: 6 Sales: 9 Listens: 13 Amish Militia move from Lancaster County to Los Angeles and commemorate their newfound freedom with an EP, 'Exodus'. Mixing several new tracks with a number of appropriate covers, the clear highlight is their reworking of Rage Against The Machine's classic "Down Rodeo"; "I'm rollin' down Rodeo doin' business./These people ain't seen an Amish man since the premiere of Witness." |
Physalis-Turbulence (Thank You Kolmogorov)[Single]Date Released: 11/6/2009 Tracks: 2 Sales: 9 Listens: 9 Zeroth issue their first ever single "Physalis-Turbulence (Thank You Kolmogorov)". Inspired by a rough flight from Brazil to Dallas, and recorded in several studios during their North American tour, "P-T" features dizzying changes in tempo and rhythm, and is not for the musically faint of heart. The "b-side" is a remix version, carried out by none other than funk maestro Zandergriff Miggs, that verges into dance music territory. Z.Miggs appears courtesy of Uncle Duff Records |
The Long Road TurningDate Released: 11/9/2009 Tracks: 20 Sales: 5 Listens: 5 Recorded during the two opening nights [Stockholm] of the Scandinavian leg of their Long Road Turning Tour, Lords Of Winter perform the complete Carus Saga live. The hometown crowd and the band are clearly both excited by the concert as the energy and intensity are palpable in the performances. [3 CD Set] |
Skull SessionDate Released: 11/9/2009 Tracks: 6 Sales: 7 Listens: 7 Recorded in several studios during their North American Karma Bullet Tour, Crimson Eye's latest EP 'Skull Session' is yet another exercise in bone-crushing heaviness from the doom metal masters. Going for less-is-more, Crimson Eye reportedly pared down over a dozen recorded tracks to the six heaviest and most brutal. All these tracks are outstanding, but the title track and the closer "Dominion Of Brutality" are the clear highlights. |
Trepanation [DVD]Date Released: 11/11/2009 Tracks: 9 Sales: 1 Listens: 1 K, the polyrhythmic master of Zeroth, Kaliclysm and Supercrusher, releases 'Trepanation' [DVD], a treasure trove for aspiring drummers. This instructional DVD provides incredible insight into two of Zeroth's most complex tracks with "dissections" of "Gyananankashu" ['Portals'] and "Supernova Canticle" ['Eclipse'], including drumless backing tracks for both. Additionally, K provides extensive exercises aimed at mastering polyrhytmic playing, and guides to kit selection and drumhead tuning. |
Stillness In The AbattoirDate Released: 11/12/2009 Tracks: 6 Sales: 5 Listens: 4 On their debut 'Stillness In The Abattoir', drone metal newcomers Kemia paint dramatic soundscapes of distorted, churning guitars, industrial tones and eerie ambient noise. As is typical with this genre, song structures are extremely loose, if non-existent, and the intent is creation of mood rather than any particular direction or movement. In lesser hands, this openness could become a muddled mess, but Kemia bring just enough focus and power, and deliver an oustanding debut. |
A Thousand Dark EndsDate Released: 11/19/2009 Tracks: 6 Sales: 8 Listens: 10 Kemia's second effort 'A Thousand Dark Ends', picks up where 'Stillness In The Abattoir' left off. Kemia masterfully blend atonal noise with metal riffing and ambient effects, creating powerfully-moving mood music. |
Canopic ChronicDate Released: 11/24/2009 Tracks: 8 Sales: 10 Listens: 14 Rastapharaohs are one of the rare bands that can disappear for long stretches of time, re-emerge with new material, and pick up right where they left off with their fans [of course, this may be due to altered perspectives on time caused by heavy cannabis use all around...]. On their third effort, 'Canopic Chronic', Rastapharaohs deliver another set of future classics, masterfully blending Egyptian mythology with rasta themes and reggae beats. Another excellent effort from a truly unique band. |

AnvilDate Released: 11/25/2009 Tracks: 6 Sales: 5 Listens: 4 Supercrusher release the 'Anvil' EP; songs recorded during the 'Predatory Urge' sessions that did not fit the theme of the completed album. As would be expected with Supercrusher, the album is packed with crushing riffery and powerful imagery. After opening slowly with the ominously plodding "Anvil" [think "Black Sabbath" on steroids], the band rips into thrash territory with "Juggernaut", and keeps the hammer down the rest of the way. An acoustic demo of "Anvil" comes as a bonus track. |
TachyonDate Released: 11/30/2009 Tracks: 10 Sales: 18 Listens: 27 On 'Tachyon', prog-metal masters Zeroth once again display astounding chops and wide-ranging reading habits, pairing complex math-metal with astrophysics and quantum mechanics. Standouts include "Sidereus Nuncius" [Starry Messenger], the high-speed thrash of the aptly-titled tracks "Tachyon" and "Superluminal", and the previously-released single "Physalis-Turbulence". The playful instrumental "Schrödinger's Cat" is a genuine surprise; displaying a previously-unheard whimsical side to Zeroth. |
No Time Like TomorrowDate Released: 12/2/2009 Tracks: 10 Sales: 8 Listens: 9 Crashing Institute's debut is titled 'No Time Like Tomorrow', and if this is truly the future of music [as the band's tagline proclaims], it hasn't come a moment too soon. Effortlessly shifting between alt-country ["Grave Consequence"], rock ["Without"], techno ["Untold Aurora"], and everything in-between, Crashing Institute display an extensive musical vocabulary in this oustanding debut. Strong performances abound, but one highlight is the delicate acoustic track "Whispering Tradition". |
Sidereus Nuncius [Single]Date Released: 12/3/2009 Tracks: 3 Sales: 4 Listens: 5 Paradox Legion EXCLUSIVE release! While not a sequel to "Supernova Canticle" ['Eclipse'], Zeroth's "Sidereus Nuncius" develops themes jammed on during performances of the former song into a complete structure. K is in his glory here, shifting between odd time signatures and shifts in tempo. B-sides include a bonus jazz-tinged instrumental track "Luminous Manipulator", and an extended atmospheric 15-minute remix of "Sidereus Nuncius" by Zeroth's European tourmates, drone metal band Kemia. |

Reign Of TerrorDate Released: 12/7/2009 Tracks: 11 Sales: 7 Listens: 8 Crimson Eye deliver a return to form on their latest release 'Reign Of Terror', going back to what they do best; crushingly-heavy riffage paired with powerful lyrical themes. Heading straight to the studio from the road, the band is extremely tight and firing on all cylinders. Case in point, the punishing title track, and the grinding "ad Vincula" and "SUV" [Selective Use of Violence, not your momma's Suburban...]. A heavied-up cover of "Witch Hunt" brings real menace to Rush's classic. |
Mars, Bringer Of War [Single]Date Released: 12/8/2009 Tracks: 1 Sales: 10 Listens: 9 Zeroth and Kemia jointly played an excerpt from "Mars, Bringer Of War" as the transition between bands during their European Portals Tour dates. The two bands have now teamed up to record a proper cover of Gustav Holst's classic piece. Famously covered by ELP in the late '80s, Zeroth/Kemia deliver an inspired version that is heavier and less synth-driven than ELP's take, while at the same time closer to the original. |
At Dawn We SlaughteredDate Released: 12/21/2009 Tracks: 10 Sales: 9 Listens: 10 Blackened Skull Ensemble once again mine classic 80's thrash for inspiration on their latest 'At Dawn We Slaughtered'. The title track kicks things off with a homage to Metallica's "One", featuring a recording of a WWI heavy artillery barrage which segues into a clean guitar riff. But, rather than slavishly imitate the classics of the past, BSE take the key elements [high speed chugging, double bass-driven beats, intricate solos] and update with modern metal flourishes. Another strong effort. |
Zeroth Vienna Dual Poster SheetDate Released: 12/29/2009 Tracks: 1 Sales: 6 Listens: 3 A Paradox Legion exclusive! Zeroth used two stunning posters for their Dec. 18, 2009 gig in Vienna, Austria. Through arrangement with LBR and the printer, Paradox Legion members may now purchase a dual-poster sheet, suitable for framing, which contains both images. Each image is 15"x42"; overall size is 33"x44". Get one while they last! |
Superluminal [Single]Date Released: 12/30/2009 Tracks: 4 Sales: 14 Listens: 15 Zeroth release the second single off their 'Tachyon' album, the blistering thrash gem "Superluminal". From a rhythmic perspective, this song is fairly simple compared to Zeroth's other fare, but at this kind of insanely fast tempo the band gets into a high gear and doesn't let up. The single includes a live recording of the track, a dramatic remix performed by dronesters Kemia - giving the song a very ethereal vibe, and an oustanding cover of Soundgarden's seminal track, "Hand Of God". |
It Only Takes OneDate Released: 1/4/2010 Tracks: 10 Sales: 6 Listens: 7 Crashing Institute's second disc 'It Only Takes One' is in effect a pair of 5-song EPs sharing a theme: relationships. The first half, lead off by the slow opener "Unlisted" [two minutes of ambience that resolves into a solo Chris Henry with acoustic], is all aching emotion paired with gentle music. The second [more active] side kicks in, with the bluesy rocker "Necessity". The title track/closer, neatly ties everything back together, leaving the listener with an uplifting sense of promise. |
Red EpochDate Released: 1/6/2010 Tracks: 10 Sales: 5 Listens: 9 Jesus Wrench are back with their third effort 'Red Epoch', drawing inspiration from the chaotic state of the world and painting a bleak picture. Stephen Smythe has never sounded more fierce, alternately snarling, screaming and shouting his lyrical rants, while Trey Drake and Andrew Grey deliver punishing rhythms. Tom Holz once again shines on guitar, mixing crushing riffs with slashing leads. Jesus Wrench once again prove they are firmly at the leading edge of extreme metal. |
Vermicular [Single]Date Released: 1/8/2010 Tracks: 5 Sales: 15 Listens: 18 Zeroth's torrent of singles continues with the latest taken from 'Tachyon', "Vermicular". Featuring no less than 13 changes of rhythm and numerous polyrhythmic passages, "Vermicular" is as its name implies; anything but a straight line. The disc includes an acoustic demo of the track and, in a first for Zeroth, guitar- and drum-only versions, allowing for shedding at-home. Zeroth also include a live cover of Meshuggah's punishing "Soul Burn", from 1995's classic 'Destroy Erase Improve'. |
Beneath The Gaze Of Osiris: Live At GizaDate Released: 2/4/2010 Tracks: 20 Sales: 16 Listens: 15 Zeroth's two nights at the Giza Necropolis have quickly become the stuff of legend. With definitive live performances of some of their most complex songs, and two inspired encore covers [Rush's '2112' and Pink Floyd's 'Dark Side Of The Moon'], Zeroth clearly achieved a career peak. Only a box set as comprehensive as 'Beneath The Gaze Of Osiris' could do justice to this event. With 4 CDs, a DVD, and a companion booklet packed with images, this is a worthy document of a historic concert event. |
Midnight SunDate Released: 2/9/2010 Tracks: 12 Sales: 10 Listens: 18 Jason Smith steps from behind the monolithic facade of Zeroth to release his solo debut 'Midnight Sun'. Consisting of 7 original songs and 5 covers, 'Midnight Sun' showcases Smith's mastery of phrasing and dynamics in a less complicated structure than his day job. Aside from the occasional bit of percussion or hint of electric guitar, the album is strictly one voice, one acoustic guitar. This stripped down approach could expose a lesser talent, but Smith shines brightly on this stellar debut. |
Cryptonomicon [Single]Date Released: 2/17/2010 Tracks: 4 Sales: 17 Listens: 19 Zeroth mine the fourth single from their 'Tachyon' album with their latest release, "Cryptonomicon". With unsual time signatures, dissonant riffing, and lyrics as impenetrable as the Enigma machine pictured on the disc's cover, "Cryptonomicon" is no doubt one of the most complicated releases from Zeroth. Also included are a demo version of the track and Windows and Mac versions of an Enigma Machine simulation. |
Feral BloomDate Released: 2/17/2010 Tracks: 7 Sales: 8 Listens: 7 Dronesters Kemia are back with their third release, 'Feral Bloom'. Kemia simultaneously succeed in building on their obvious strengths while pushing the sonic envelope. As on their previous releases, they display a mastery of metallic grind and moody atmosphere. However, they also show a softer side, case in point the closer "Adrift" which could easily be the soundtrack to a ship or an astronaut floating away into sweet oblivion. Another solid effort from an ever-intriguing band. |
Impact ZoneDate Released: 2/22/2010 Tracks: 20 Sales: 6 Listens: 4 Recorded at the New York City show of their first tour, Supercrusher release 'Impact Zone', a 2-CD sonic onslaught. Including choice cuts from the entire Supercrusher catalog, plus three excellent covers [2 Kyuss, 1 Metallica], 'Impact Zone' is an oustanding document of Supercrusher's devastating live prowess. Also includes a bonus DVD with the Singularity video and Singularity Recording Sessions, offering a glimpse into the recording process as Supercrusher construct this monster track. |
ChernobylDate Released: 3/18/2010 Tracks: 6 Sales: 7 Listens: 5 Kemia release the fourth installment in their continuing evolution 'Chernobyl'. While not a true concept album, the 6 tracks all clearly share common inspiration in the post-apocalyptic wasteland of the Chernobyl Exclusion Zone. Kemia's trademark grind blends with eerie ambient noise [including samples recorded on-site], resulting in a drone masterwork. Once again showing the strong ties between Kemia and Zeroth, guitarist Dan Hughes guests on "Palinopsia", adding extra structure and heft. |
SystemaDate Released: 5/12/2010 Tracks: 9 Sales: 10 Listens: 11 Following a long period of silence, prog-metallers Obsidian Paradox release 'Systema'. Featuring 9 finely-crafted tunes, replete with metronome-busting changes in tempo and meter, it's obvious where the time went. The band is in top form throughout, but the grinding, industrial-tinged title track and the eerily magnificent "Perfect Funeral Drum" are the two highlights. OP take a page from fellow LBR artists Kemia's book, with the atmospheric droning closer "Dense Afterthought". |
Reconstructing The TruthDate Released: 6/3/2010 Tracks: 11 Sales: 9 Listens: 10 Written on the road, Crashing Institute's latest disc 'Reconstructing The Truth' ever so subtly narrows the musical scope which was so broad on their first two albums, while magnifying their focus and power. Capturing the mindset of a working band on the road, lyrical themes of separation, loss and trust are paired with fluid explorations of blues-/folk-influenced rock. CI once again show exceptional chops and a keen knack for meshing diverse musical elements into an intricate sonic landscape. |
Age Of SagasDate Released: 6/29/2010 Tracks: 20 Sales: 5 Listens: 6 Based on the Nordic mythical tradition of Ragnarok [downfall of the gods], Lords Of Winter's latest effort 'Age Of Sagas' is another epic effort from the fantasy metal stars. Fourteen tracks grouped into 4 suites [plus 'Intro' and 'Outro' sections] pair punishing metal riffs with dramatic orchestral arrangements straight out of Wagner [courtesy of the Stockholm Orchestra]. Add in the epic lyrical matter, and 'Age Of Sagas' will no doubt stand as a benchmark in the fantasy metal genre. [2 CDs] |
The American Way Of WarDate Released: 9/30/2010 Tracks: 13 Sales: 9 Listens: 21 Jesus Wrench are well-known for their unrelenting, uncompromising approach to their music and lyrics. Their latest release 'The American Way Of War' builds on their previous accomplishments with a precise and devastating musical attack and lyrics that alternately celebrate, probe and implicate. Inspired by America's dual role as the world's leading democracy, and dominant military power, Jesus Wrench deliver a concept album ripped straight from the history books and today's headlines. |
Here Be DragonsDate Released: 10/8/2010 Tracks: 12 Sales: 13 Listens: 23 'Here Be Dragons': words famously used by mapmakers to denote areas unknown, unexplored, mysterious. Crashing Institute attempt to tackle many such unknowns on their latest release, exploring the dynamics of inter- and intra-personal relationships, truth, philosophy and religion. As on their previous efforts, musicianship is at the forefront: the band covering ground from folk and alt-country to blues and contemporary rock. Another outstanding disc from one of today's most compelling acts. |
ex NaturaDate Released: 10/9/2010 Tracks: 7 Sales: 6 Listens: 7 Kemia's latest 'ex Natura' is all about creating order from chaos. Taking inspiration from the natural world, or exploitation thereof, Kemia skillfully blend extensive sampling with their tradmark metallic grind. The clear highlight is the epic closing/title track 'ex Natura'. Over its' 16 1/2 minute duration, 'ex Natura' ebbs in flows as waves of dissonant riffing alternately clash and intertwine with the buzz of bees, surge of the ocean and myriad other environmental recordings. |
Zeroth Vienna 2010 Gig PosterDate Released: 10/10/2010 Tracks: 1 Sales: 5 Listens: 2 Exclusive to the Paradox Legion and fresh from the gig! Zeroth once again pull out the stops poster-wise for Vienna. The 2010 gig poster is another stunner, featuring a spectral skull caged within a mathematical/industrial structure. Image size is 40"x20". Pick up a copy while they last! |
babelDate Released: 10/11/2010 Tracks: 8 Sales: 7 Listens: 10 Inspired by the many cultures experienced during their Tachyon World Tour, Zeroth's latest effort 'babel' [sic] is an instrumental concept piece following the rise and fall of the biblical Tower of Babel. Recorded live during soundchecks in several cities, the centerpiece is the "Etemenanki Suite". Spanning nearly 25 minutes, this epic shifts from militaristic percussion ["Brick Upon Brick"] to soaring, ethereal guitar ["To Scrape The Heavens"] and punishing extreme metal ["His Will Be Done"]. |
fiveDate Released: 10/22/2010 Tracks: 16 Sales: 10 Listens: 18 Crimson Eye unleash another metal concept masterpiece with their latest: 'five'. Inspired by the "Canonical Five" Jack The Ripper murders in London in 1888, 'Five' parallels the increasingly ritualistic series of murders with increasingly aggressive and complex compositions in a pseudo-operatic format. Interspersed with eerie skit-like interludes, 'Five' is a masterpiece of shifting moods, building tension and frenzied release, and will likely prove a landmark concept album across any genre. |

AibohphobiADate Released: 11/18/2010 Tracks: 11 Sales: 7 Listens: 12 Obsidian Paradox's latest release 'AibohphobiA' [the fear of palindromes] consists of 11 tracks inspired by the palindromes that serve as their titles. Pushing beyond the conventions of progressive metal, OP embrace new age soundscapes ["Do Geese See God?"], dissonant jazz-metal ["I Prefer Pi"], thrash ["Deified"] and doom sludge ["Devil Never Even Lived"]. The crowning achievement is the epic title track/closer "AibohphobiA", featuring cyclical/reversing riffs and sinuous changes in rhythm. |
OasisDate Released: 12/1/2010 Tracks: 12 Sales: 14 Listens: 34 Jason Smith's second effort 'Oasis' finds the Zeroth frontman taking a wider detour than on 'Midnight Sun', which was basically an unplugged metal album. Featuring 10 original tracks [+2 live cuts], with a strong folk/country flavor, Smith shows his skills as a master lyricist and musician. Once again featuring a stripped-down "one guitar, one voice" approach, except for the two outstanding duets with guest Alison Jones, Smith shows he can do gentle and soft equally well as punishing and loud. |
2010 Tachyon Tour Backstage PassDate Released: 12/3/2010 Tracks: 1 Sales: 5 Listens: 0 You went to the show, and have your memories and maybe a t-shirt to remember it by. And be sure to specify if you want virginal, or, um....experienced. |
CyberscreamDate Released: 12/4/2010 Tracks: 4 Sales: 11 Listens: 15 Zeroth whets their fans' appetites for new material with their 'Cyberscream' EP. Featuring four intense and complex tracks that share alliterative titles and a common lyrical theme of radical human evolution, but have little in common musically, Zeroth continue to forge their own unique path as the dominant act of the progressive metal genre. |
The Indigo SeaDate Released: 1/14/2011 Tracks: 12 Sales: 10 Listens: 12 Crashing Institute have made an artform out of exploring the human condition, and continue their critique on their latest release 'The Indigo Sea'. The 12-track disc features sweeping soundscapes that span acoustic folk ["Silent Gambler"], drone ["Hypnotic"], classic rock ["Clean Break"] and psychedelica ["Highway Zero"]. In lesser hands painting in such broad strokes could devolve into an unwieldy mess, but as CI has repeatedly proven, they are firmly among today's elite contemporary acts. |
Concentric Horizons [Single]Date Released: 1/26/2011 Tracks: 4 Sales: 8 Listens: 8 Zeroth's debut single from 'Concentric Horizons' is the title track. Befitting the title, this complex track features challenging lyrics regarding the duality of existence and parallel riff cycles that circle around each other, yet never quite meet. Only a band of such abundant skill as Zeroth could pull off such a dramatic feat. Also included are demo and remixed versions, plus a previously-unreleased track "Shockwave", which as its' name suggests, is a punishing exercise in heaviness. |
Forbidden Sun [Single]Date Released: 2/15/2011 Tracks: 3 Sales: 13 Listens: 19 The second single taken from Zeroth's 'Concentric Horizons', "Forbidden Sun" offers a scathing indictment of organized religion, so-called secret societies and other groups dedicated to the extension of their own power at the expense of individual liberties. Musically, the band is razor-sharp, delivering their trademark twisting riffs and polyrhythms with astounding precision and power. Also includes a dramatic remix by Kemia, plus a rare live performance of "Schrödinger's Cat" ['Tachyon']. |
Blackened Skull EnsembleDate Released: 3/1/2011 Tracks: 11 Sales: 9 Listens: 9 On their self-titled third effort, Blackened Skull Ensemble recapture the fierce energy of their 'War Crest' debut. Charging right out of the gate with the full-bore thrash of "Crusader", BSE grab the listener by the throat and do not relent until the final backwards-recorded vocals and manipulated feedback of "666 Cycle Hum" fade out. In between, BSE tackle themes of conflict, technology and death, paired with blistering thrash that harkens back to the heyday of the genre. |
The Ecstasy Of Eternal NightDate Released: 3/8/2011 Tracks: 7 Sales: 11 Listens: 11 Death - the passage from existence to nothingness. Kemia's latest 'The Ecstasy Of Eternal Night' may well be the soundtrack. Kemia is known for crafting dramatic soundscapes, and the entire album is a masterclass in atmosphere. The ear strains to catch hints of whispers wafting in and out among ambient noise and disorienting grinding riffs. The crowning achievement however is the closer "Non" - a drone "Two Minutes Of Silence". Never has nothing sounded so utterly oppressive and hopeless. |
Concentric HorizonsDate Released: 3/15/2011 Tracks: 20 Sales: 13 Listens: 27 There is the world that's seen, and the world that's unseen; the facade, and the truth [or lies] behind. Zeroth charge headlong at this duality in their latest release. With 20 tracks that alternately elevate, question, inspire and plunge into the murky abyss, 'Concentric Horizons' offers up a masterwork both intellectual and emotive. Musically, Zeroth is powerful and finely-honed: delivering atmospheric passages and moments of calm amid the precisely-executed metallic maelstrom. [2 CDs] |
FlipDate Released: 3/17/2011 Tracks: 7 Sales: 6 Listens: 6 Percussionist extraordinaire K [Zeroth, Supercrusher] returns with his side project Kaliclysm, delivering an instrumental jazz experience on 'Flip'. Eschewing his trademark polyrhythmic pyrotechnics for more traditional jazz sensibility, K delivers steady jazz beats, highlighted with tasteful fills and only the occasional head-scratching foray into calculus percussion. Highlights are the title track and opener, the sinous 'A Slitherin' Mood', and his tribute to Dave Brubeck "Take 6(66)". |
The Radiation ChroniclesDate Released: 3/22/2011 Tracks: 20 Sales: 10 Listens: 15 Crimson Eye follow their acclaimed 'five' with a new concept masterpiece; 'The Radiation Chronicles'. The storyline of a nuclear apocalypse [the US/Russia versus China] and the aftermath is deftly handled - broken into 3 chapters [plus Epilogue] separated by spoken-word sections that act both as political critique and plot devices. Grim and timely subject matter is paired with a musical assualt that ranges from sludge grind to full-bore thrash for another classic from the doom masters. [2 CDs] |
Utopiate [Single]Date Released: 4/24/2011 Tracks: 3 Sales: 7 Listens: 9 To forget one's cares and walk down the unearthly tunnel. To go beyond oneself, and become one with the void. Zeroth's latest single "Utopiate" is a harrowing chronicle of the quest for transcendence with an ultimate descent into madness. Paired with a soundscape that at times verges into dissonant noise, "Utopiate" is certainly one of Zeroth's most challenging compositions, yet compelling in its' unflinching intensity. Also includes a demo version, and the 'Portals'-era track, "Occulus". |
MetamorphexistenceDate Released: 4/29/2011 Tracks: 11 Sales: 8 Listens: 12 German progressive metallers Voynix deliver one of the most promising debuts since Zeroth's 'fibonacci epoch' with 'Metamorphexistence'. Voynix hit all the right notes, with a varied sonic attack - from the jackhammer riffing of "Flashpoint" and "The Red Proxy", to the twisting psychedelic-metal of "Dose", and the layered, complex structures of the "Imagos" cycle. The eerie instrumental "Mourning Blanket" sets up a somber mood which leads into the dirge-like closer "Final Detour". |
RadiantDate Released: 5/25/2011 Tracks: 12 Sales: 8 Listens: 9 Crashing Institute return with their take on coming-of-age themes on 'Radiant'. With 11 original tracks, plus 1 choice cover, oriented around first loves, first heartbreaks, and rites of passage into young adulthood, 'Radiant' is yet another insightful observation on the human condition from CI. While CI shed some of their wide-ranging musical scope for a more mellow intimate feel, their craftsmanship in capturing the nuance and vibe of performance is unparalleled. |
Iris [Single]Date Released: 6/2/2011 Tracks: 3 Sales: 14 Listens: 18 The 4th single from Zeroth's 'Concentric Horizons', "Iris" deals with the manipulation of perception by the media, and the inability to believe everything that one sees. Zeroth take inspiration from the leaves of a camera lens diaphragm in delivering angular, choppy riffs, that circle each other as they gradually tighten to the thematic climax of the song. Also includes a dramatic remix by industrial band Sinthetic, as well as a 'Concentric Horizons' castoff "Illusions Behind". |
